Painting BIG with Matt Lively
Painting BIG with Matt Lively
Painting Big with Matt Lively
Thursdays from 12pm–5pm, July 2nd - July 30th (five 5-hour sessions!)
Reception for the finished works: Saturday, August 1st 4pm-6pm
Painting Big with Matt Lively is a class that explores strategies and techniques for creating large-scale paintings—often an intimidating endeavor. We provide support and guidance throughout the painting process, along with a dedicated workspace and a custom-made, primed panel for you to create your Big Painting. Students are expected to bring their own paints and ideas; however, materials for the first meeting will be provided. All mediums are welcome.
During this session, we will be working inside Universal Arts Teaching Gallery for the duration of the class. Students will keep their work on the wall for all five weeks, and the paintings will be available for public viewing each Friday and Saturday following class. This is intended to give the community a behind-the-scenes look at how these large works come to life—and hopefully inspire more artists to try working big. Universal Arts supports regional artists through inclusive instruction, exhibitions and advocacy.
Universal Arts : 120 N 18th St, Richmond, VA 23223
Parking will be available in the new lot across the street
Matt Lively has extensive experience with large-scale works.
Guest artist instruction by Amy Smith, Ed Trask and Heide Trepanier who bring deep knowledge of color theory and composition will join for parts of some sessions.
The class includes materials for the first meeting, instruction and demos, a 48” x 72” gessoed panel, and a gallery venue for showing the work throughout the five-week course—culminating in an opening on August 1st. The gallery will receive 30% of the sale of the work.

I look forward to painting with you!
